Speed is a side effect, not a goal
The biggest mistake people make when trying to type faster is chasing speed directly. WPM is a byproduct of two things: how confidently your fingers know where the keys are, and how little your brain has to consciously translate a word into a sequence of keystrokes. Chase those two things and the number takes care of itself.
1. Slow down before you speed up
If you're making more than 2-3 errors per 100 characters, you're already typing too fast for your current skill level. Every error costs you far more time than typing slightly slower would have — you have to notice it, stop, backspace, and re-type. Run a few simulations at a pace where your accuracy sits above 97%, then gradually push the pace up.
2. Fix your weakest fingers, not your whole hand
Almost everyone has one or two fingers doing more than their fair share of work — usually the index fingers — while the ring and pinky fingers lag behind. Pay attention to which characters make you hesitate. If it's always q, p, z, or punctuation, that's a pinky problem, and it's worth deliberately practicing words that lean on those keys rather than avoiding them.
3. Type in chunks, not letters
Slow typists process one letter at a time. Fast typists recognize common letter clusters — "tion", "ing", "the", "and" — as single motor patterns. This comes from repetition, not effort. The more volume you type, the more these patterns get burned in automatically.
4. Consistency beats bursts

5. Warm up before a serious attempt

Worked example: why "faster but sloppier" usually loses
Picture two 60-second runs. Run A types at a raw 50 WPM pace but averages 6 errors per 100 characters — well above the 2-3 error guideline from tip #1. Run B types at a raw 45 WPM pace with roughly 1 error per 100 characters. Each error costs roughly 3-4 keystrokes of overhead to notice, backspace and re-type. At 6 errors per 100 characters, Run A is burning something like 18-24 extra keystrokes per 100 just on corrections — time that never shows up as "typing" but still eats into the run. Run B's near-clean pace carries almost none of that overhead. The raw 5 WPM gap Run A appears to have going in gets eaten by correction time, and its final accuracy score takes the hit besides.
